Portugal automatic sprinkler extinguishing systems must be used in:
- Car parks higher than 9 m or larger than 9500 m2 or with one or more floors below the reference plane.
- All floors of automatic car parks.
- Offices higher than 28 m or with an occupation higher than 1000 people.
- Spaces for shows and public assemblies equal or higher than 28 m, with one or more floors below the reference plane, with an occupation higher than 1000 people; In these spaces it also must be used in stages and substages up to 50 m2 and with a deluge system when higher than 50 m2
- Hotels higher than 9 m, with an occupation higher than 500 people or 200 depending on the assessment of some risk locations.
- Commercial spaces and transport facilities higher than 9 m, with one or more floors below the reference plane or with an occupation higher than 1000 people; There may be some exceptions to these cases.
- Industrial spaces and warehouses with a modified fire load density higher than 5000 MJ/m2 or with more than one floor below the reference plane.
- Places adjacent to interior open areas with a height greater than 20m.
- Places which are difficult to access, to be decided on a case by case basis by the fire authorities.
- In existing transforming stations that use flammable liquid dielectric, either in transformers or in cutting devices and whose location is not in accordance with the regulation, as a compensatory and duly justified measure.
- In openings in walls or floors resistant to fire crossed by mobile means of transport, straps or screens, as a compensatory and duly justified measure.
- At the places of manufacture, storage or handling of products not reacting dangerously with water, as a compensatory and duly justified measure.
- In flammable liquid or gas deposits, as a compensatory and duly justified measure.
- In areas intended for painting or applying varnishes, glues or organic solvents with a flash point below 55 ° C, in building spaces with an area greater than 30 m2.
- In industrial equipment and in all existing locations that cannot fully comply with the passive measures indicated in the regulation.
